Enclosure No. 1.
HONG KONG GENERAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
94
Hong Kong, 14th February, 1930.
Sir,
I have now the honour to reply to the
Government's letter No.3240/1929, dated 50th October, 1929,
requesting any observations or representations which the
Chamber of Commerce may desire to make on the Report of the
Salaries Commission, 1929.
A Special Committee, consisting of the Hon.
Mr. V. E. L. Shenton (Chairman), Mr. M. T. Johnson and Mir.
A. Ritchie, was appointed to examine the Report in detail
and three copies of their comments are enclosed, together
with three copies of a summary of the evidence collected
as a result of a circular addressed to the heads of firms
and companies which are large employers in the Colony.
I am directed to state that the Committee,
after careful consideration, has adopted the Report of the
Special Committee as its considered views upon the Salaries
question. Fran this decision Mr. Paul Lauder, who was a
member of the Commission, and is a member of the General
Committee of the Chamber, dissociates himself.
I am desired to convey the thanks of the
Chamber to the Government for having been afforded an
opportunity of expressing its views on this most important
subject.
The Honourable
The Colonial Secretary,
Hong Kong.
I have, &c.,
(Sd.) M. F. Key,
Secretary.
